Hits for the Cure softball event runs Friday and Saturday

The third year of the Hits for the Cure softball event returns to the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex on Friday and Saturday.

Eleven teams from around the state, including Journal Star-area squads Notre Dame, Illinois Valley Central, Brimfield/Elmwood, Lewistown, Morton, Farmington and Peoria Christian, will take part in the 13-game event. A ball toss competition, bake sale, 50/50 raffle, auction and T-shirt sales are also part of Hits for the Cure.

Founder Chloe Petersen, a Notre Dame grad and former two-time JS All-Area first baseman, started the event as a way to raise money in the fight to end childhood cancer. Petersen is a cancer survivor, spending almost the first six years of her life at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with a Wilms’ tumor, a malignant tumor found in the kidney causing cancer.

Play begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.
